Multidose and disposable diapers

Diapers have probably existed since the 19th century. At that time, they consisted of rubber pants and a cloth diaper. As soon as the cloth diaper was soiled, it was replaced with a clean one and boiled in a pot. Disposable diapers have their origin in 1946, when American Marion Donovan cut shower curtains and made diaper pants out of them. These "Boaters" were marketed from 1949 onwards; at that time, they consisted of parachute nylon and snap fasteners. One major advantage of the Boaters over rubber pants was that sufficient air reached the skin and significantly fewer diaper rashes resulted. After Marion Donovan received the patent for the Boaters in 1951, she developed the first disposable diaper made of paper. Initially, no paper mill was seriously interested in this invention. Only a few years later, Victor Mills, a chemical engineer at Procter & Gamble, recognized the economic potential. From 1961, the new product was initially distributed in the USA under the name "Pampers".

Pampers diapers have also been available in Germany since 1973. Due to the good acceptance of paper diapers, an increasing number of hygiene product manufacturers decided to produce disposable diapers. Of course, the companies concerned did not fail to continuously improve the diapers. Among other things, in 1980, the first disposable diapers with elastic cuffs were introduced, which provide both a better fit and good leak protection. Since the mid-1980s, diapers have not only consisted of several layers of pulp but also an SAP, which can absorb relatively large amounts of moisture. In 1995, Procter & Gamble finally introduced resealable Velcro fasteners, which made handling the diapers even more convenient. In this online shop, you can choose between Pampers brand diapers and the EDEKA own brand Elkos under diapers and accessories. In the subcategory accessories, you will find changing pads that allow for hygienic diaper changes at home and on the go.

Advantages of disposable diapers

If you assume that a child usually needs diapers for about two and a half years, you can expect about 5,000 disposable diapers per child. In comparison to cloth diapers, an enormous amount of waste is created, and the costs are relatively high. However, the advantages of paper diapers outweigh - especially due to their simple handling: having to change a cloth diaper on the go is much more complicated. With a cloth diaper, you also have to expect that something will leak. And finally, disposable diapers eliminate the water- and energy-intensive cleaning required for soiled cloth diapers.

In the former GDR, modern paper diapers were not available at all or could be purchased as a luxury item (and correspondingly expensive). Until German reunification, most East German women did not have the choice between disposable and cloth diapers but had to opt for the latter. Either muslin or cotton diapers were used, which were often supplemented with a molton insert to increase absorbency. With the beginning of the 1990s, many East German women decided to switch to disposable diapers.

How modern disposable diapers work

The undoubtedly most important component of a modern disposable diaper is the superabsorbent used. This is a plastic material capable of absorbing amounts of liquid that are multiple times its own weight. The individual particles are 0.1 to 1.0 millimeters in size and have a strongly rugged, porous structure. The capillary effect causes liquid to be attracted and transmitted towards the particle core. Once the superabsorbent comes into contact with liquid, the contained sodium ions cause the formation of salt. The resulting osmotic pressure largely determines the maximum absorption capacity of the particles. The swelling of the superabsorbent leads to the formation of a hydrogel. If you have ever looked closely at a wet diaper, you will surely have noticed this hydrogel. Even with very heavily soaked and heavy diapers, the superabsorbent hardly causes any leaking and/or a wet baby bottom.

By proper wrapping and careful care, you can effectively counteract irritated skin in the diaper area. In principle, the younger a baby is, the more often it needs to be changed. In any case, a fresh diaper is due as soon as the baby has done its business or the diaper is soaked. To be able to change diapers as comfortably as possible, a changing table and a washable changing pad should be available. Regardless of whether the diaper contains only urine or stool, you should gently but thoroughly clean your baby's bottom from front to back with a washcloth or care cloth. Before putting on the new diaper, the diaper area must be completely dry. Provided it is warm enough, it is quite advisable to let the baby kick for a few minutes. Since most disposable diapers nowadays have elastic cuffs, you hardly have to worry about putting the diaper on too tightly. However, to make sure that your child does not feel constricted by the diaper, you should put one of your fingers between the diaper and the body: if you can move your finger in and out without any problems, the diaper is correctly fitted. If, however, the finger barely fits between the child and the diaper, the Velcro fasteners must be moved outwards.
