Chips - with and without flavor
Neither chips nor pretzels should be missing at a party. These two representatives of the salty snacks category are probably the most popular ones here in Germany. Asian snack foods have been known in Germany for several decades now, but they are far less frequently eaten than traditional salty snacks.
The invention of potato chips is said to be due to a dissatisfied guest who found the fried potatoes served to him too thick in 1853. As a result, the cook George Crum, who was working in Saratoga Springs (USA), sliced the potatoes extremely thinly. The result was chips that were so crispy that they could not be picked up with a fork. The guest, however, was allegedly thrilled, and the fried thin potato slices were subsequently included in the menu as Saratoga Chips. It took about 70 years from the time of invention to the industrial production of chips: in the 1920s, the American Herman Lay produced the first chips using a potato peeling machine; however, the potato slices were initially completely unseasoned.
Since 1929, the owner of the Viennese "Schweizerhaus" has been offering his guests potato chips, which were referred to as "raw slices". Thanks to the experiments of the Irish family business Tayto, seasoned potato chips have been available since the early 1950s. A few years later, this company also introduced the first cheese-onion flavor for chips. 1951 was the year in which the history of potato chips began in Germany. The Flessner KG produced chips with an automatic production line, which they sold throughout Europe. While chips initially consisted only of potatoes, vegetable oil, and salt, nowadays you can choose from a variety of different compositions. In our online shop, you will find a wide range of chips.
Flips - the snack with peanut flavor
Unlike chips, flips are not based on potatoes, but on cornmeal. This is mixed with water in a so-called extruder (a device that produces high pressure and high temperatures). The resulting mass is formed into an endless strand using a die. A rotating knife then divides the strand into small pieces, and the raw flips are produced. The typical peanut flavor of flips is achieved by coating them with a combination of vegetable fat, ground peanuts, and spices.
Peanut flips have been known in Germany since 1963. In this year, Bahlsen produced the first packages of flips. Nowadays, there are also several different varieties of flips. Under the name "maize snacks," you can also choose from other cornmeal snacks - such as those with a cheese flavor. Tortilla or corn chips are also becoming increasingly popular. The typically triangular chips are cut from corn tortillas. The simplest version of corn chips is nachos, which originally come from Mexico. There, chopped and fried corn tortillas are often served as a side dish to soups and appetizers. The range of this online shop includes not only various types of tortilla chips but also delicious dips that are a perfect complement to this snack food.
Pretzels and salt sticks
It is still unclear when and by whom pretzels were invented. Among other things, there is a legend that a Bavarian baker mistook lye for sugar water in 1839 and coated the pretzels with it. Salt sticks have been around since the 1930s. Again, it was the company Bahlsen that began mass-producing a previously unknown foodstuff.
Meanwhile, you can choose from pretzels and salt sticks that differ in size, shape, and ingredients. We even offer organic salt sticks and pretzels with flour and barley malt extract from controlled organic cultivation. Salty sticks and pretzels are a type of pastry that stays very dry and crispy under an airtight seal. The ingredients are water, flour, salt, malt, and sodium hydroxide. Like crackers and cookies, salty sticks and pretzels are considered fine pastries. Characteristic of fine baked goods is that they must contain at least 10 percent fat and/or sugar. Normally only white flour is used, but some manufacturers of salty snacks are considering adding whole grain products to their range.
Health aspects
Especially in a social setting or while watching TV in the evening, people usually don't pay attention to eating little of the available salty snacks but rather like to indulge. However, both chips and flips contain up to 530 kilocalories per 100 grams and therefore do not contribute to maintaining your ideal weight. It is somewhat better to choose salty sticks because they contain "only" 350 kilocalories per 100 grams. Therefore, you should not get into the habit of possibly consuming larger quantities of salty snacks every evening - fruits and vegetables are of course the far healthier alternative. By the way, you can now also find reduced-fat salty snacks in our online shop. The fat content in chips made using traditional methods has been reduced from 35 percent to about 17 percent.
Nuts and almonds as a snack
Nuts, almonds, and trail mix are also considered a healthy alternative to salty snacks. Although the fat content is similarly high, nuts and almonds contain vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to your health. If you particularly like peanuts, you can buy flips, roasted peanuts coated with dough, or a combination of peanuts and raisins to enjoy variety in terms of chips, flips & co. at home. When you click on a product that interests you, the respective ingredients will be displayed. Sometimes, product reviews from other customers of our shop are also available, allowing you to make a purchase decision even more quickly.
Whether you need salty snacks for a party or want to stock up: this online shop for groceries gives you the opportunity to choose from a range that takes every taste into account. All items are packaged so that they can be stored for months without any problems.
