The importance of fluid intake

The human body needs water to carry out necessary metabolic processes. Adequate intake of water is important, especially in relation to the elimination of toxins. While a person can go a relatively long time without solid food, we can only go a few days without water. After all, a human body is about 70 percent water. Since the human body unfortunately cannot store water or anything similar, regular intake of water is necessary. The German Nutrition Society recommends consuming at least 1.3 to 1.5 liters of liquid per day. On average, daily food intake provides the body with an additional liter of water. In general, you should prefer drinks that are unsweetened and non-alcoholic.

If you are one of the people who like to exercise frequently, your need for water is significantly increased and can amount to 3 liters or more. Everyone has an increased need for fluid at relatively high temperatures. The same applies if there are illnesses that are accompanied by fever and/or diarrhea. A simple method to quickly find out if you have drunk enough is the "pinch test": place a hand with the palm down, pull up the skin on the back of the hand and let go. If the skin does not immediately tighten again, your body lacks fluid.

Mineral water - probably the healthiest drink

Mineral water is natural water that comes from a spring and contains various minerals. Every mineral water is extracted from deep water that has formed from precipitation. On its way through the different layers of rock, the precipitation water absorbs minerals and is naturally filtered. In 1984, the Mineral and Table Water Regulation was published, which defines the nature of table water, spring water, and natural mineral water. In Germany alone, there are currently about 220 well operators and more than 500 different mineral water brands.

Mineral water has been extracted and valued for many centuries. For example, the Germanic and Roman peoples filled mineral water in clay pots, sealed them, and transported the precious water over longer distances. In the Middle Ages, drinking cures with mineral water were very popular. From the 17th century onwards, it was possible to seal clay pots and baskets in such a way that the mineral water they contained could even be transported overseas from the European mainland. Until the mid-19th century, mineral water as a drink was reserved for the wealthy classes. Only with the development of more effective filling techniques and cost-effective shipping methods could the average citizen afford mineral water. Currently, every German drinks about 143 liters of mineral water per year.

Fruit spritzers or fruit juice spritzers are a combination of mineral/table water and fruit juice. The actual fruit juice is diluted with mineral water in the desired ratio and enjoyed in the form of a refreshing spritzer. Thus, a spritzer is the right choice for all those who find pure mineral water too boring. You should definitely prefer fruit spritzers that do without the addition of sugar or sugar substitutes. In this online shop you will find a wide range of mineral water and spritzers.

Fruit juices and fruit juice drinks

While fruit juice must have a fruit content of 100 percent, fruit juice drinks may also contain ingredients such as sugar and flavorings. The minimum fruit content required for fruit juice drinks is regulated in the German Food Code in the guidelines for soft drinks. How is fruit juice made? On the one hand, there is the possibility of squeezing the fruit directly or grinding it into pulp with a mill and then squeezing it out. The result is direct juice in both cases. On the other hand, fruit juice can also be made from concentrate. The aromas are extracted after juicing and the water is removed by evaporation. Fruit juice is made from the (well-stored and transportable) concentrate by adding water and natural fruit aroma. To make fruit juice durable, it must be pasteurized at around 85 degrees Celsius. This is why fruit juice has only existed for a little over 100 years: only with the development of beverage pasteurization could the natural fermentation of fruit juice be prevented.

Modern beverages: soft drinks and energy drinks

Nowadays, non-alcoholic beverages are commonly referred to as soft drinks. According to German food law, beverages with an alcohol content of at most 0.5 percent are considered soft drinks. In fact, due to slight fermentation processes, fruit juices and fruit juice drinks may also contain small amounts of alcohol. In many restaurants and bars, you will also find soft drinks labeled as soft drinks, such as lemonades. In general, a lemonade (or "limo") is a sweetened non-alcoholic carbonated drink with fruit extracts. The best-known varieties are orange and lemonade. In addition, the cola invented in 1885 belongs to the subcategory of lemonade. In our online shop, you have the choice between many different lemonades - both in bottles and cans.

Energy drinks have been known in Germany since the late 1980s as a quick liquid energy booster. The stimulating effect of energy drinks is mainly due to the caffeine they contain. Apart from water and caffeine, sugar or artificial sweeteners, carbon dioxide, taurine, B vitamins, and minerals are the usual ingredients for energy drinks. On average, an energy drink (250 ml) contains 80 mg of caffeine.

Tea and iced tea

As already mentioned, unsweetened tea is almost as recommended as mineral water. Our shop offers an extensive range of teas, ranging from fruit tea to green tea to black tea and special tea blends. You can choose between portion bags and loose tea. Under the name medicinal tea, you will also find soothing herbal teas.

Do you prefer ice-cold drinks on warm days? Then you should try one or the other type of iced tea. In recent years, the traditional black tea variety with lemon juice and sugar has been joined by a considerable number of iced tea varieties. Combinations of fruit tea, green tea, or black tea with fruit juice, sugar, or artificial sweeteners are popular, for example. You have not only a good selection of varieties but also of packaging forms.
