Gradual adaptation to the outside world

Unlike in the womb, the skin of a newborn is no longer protected by the so-called vernix caseosa. This whitish sebaceous gland secretion is produced from around the 17th week of pregnancy and, in addition to 80% water, contains approximately ten percent lipids. The remaining ten percent is made up of shed skin cells and lanugo hair. The unborn baby is thus well equipped to handle the effects of meconium and ammonium-rich amniotic fluid. Vernix caseosa can initially prevent bacterial skin infections after birth. Therefore, it is recommended to only roughly remove the vernix caseosa after birth. A newborn should not be bathed for the first time until after a few days, once the umbilical cord stump has healed. Otherwise, there is a risk of germs entering the wound.

A newborn's skin must gradually learn to cope with environmental influences. In particular, the fatty layer and both the sebaceous and sweat glands function only poorly. Apart from the fact that you must ensure your baby is dressed appropriately for the outside temperature, you should also protect it from sunlight. Since a well-functioning acid mantle must also be formed, bacteria and fungal spores can be dangerous for baby skin. Careful and gentle cleaning and care are necessary so that the skin can gradually but surely adapt to the conditions outside the womb.

Products for gentle cleaning of skin and hair

In general, all cleaning products for babies and toddlers should be as mild and natural as possible. Therefore, it is better to avoid products that contain preservatives, dyes, mineral oils, and perfume. Usually, it is entirely sufficient to clean the baby with a washcloth and lukewarm water during the first two to three weeks of life. To prevent your baby from getting cold during this procedure, you should ensure a room temperature of 23-25 degrees Celsius. It is advisable to begin cleaning with the face and then gradually clean all body parts gently from top to bottom. It is practical to first dry the previously cleaned area and then continue with the "cat wash."

To prevent the sensitive baby skin from becoming irritated, you should remove milk and food residue from the face as soon as possible with a damp washcloth or a damp cloth. The products we offer in the subcategory of care wipes are particularly practical for when you're on-the-go: choose from baby wipes from well-known brands such as Hipp, Penaten, and Pampers. They are either baby care wipes soaked in a gentle cleansing lotion or tear-resistant cellulose wipes that you can use dry or moist. The moist wipes, which are usually in a resealable package, also make diaper changes on-the-go easy since they allow for thorough but gentle cleaning of the diaper area. To prevent diaper rash, you should make sure to remove urine and stool residue during every diaper change. If you thoroughly clean your baby's genital area with dermatologically tested wet wipes before putting on a new diaper, it will less likely lead to skin irritation.

Bath additives and shampoos

You can consider giving your child a bath from the third week of life. Choose a suitable tub that you can hold your baby securely in or that comes with a suitable support cushion. Dermatologists recommend bathing infants no more than once or twice a week for three to minutes. On the one hand, make sure that the room temperature is pleasant and the water temperature is between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius. Our online shop has a wide range of bath additives, wash creams, and shampoos. The sparingly used care baths for babies contain replenishing substances and protect the skin from drying out. Only when the child's hair has become thicker, you can start washing the hair regularly with some baby shampoo. Before that, it is entirely sufficient to clean the hair fluff with warm water and a washcloth/sponge. Cradle cap, which occurs in many infants and usually lasts several months, can be counteracted with baby shampoo and a soft baby brush (once the hair is dry). After each bath and/or hair wash, it is extremely important to dry your baby thoroughly, but not by rubbing. You can also opt for a lukewarm hair dryer.

Baby creams and lotions

Basically, the same applies to baby creams and lotions available in Germany as for cleaning products for babies: less is more - this applies to both the number of ingredients and their usage. For the good of the child, it is not least necessary to avoid chemical additives and fragrances that can cause allergies. We offer, for example, care lotions and creams from brands such as Bübchen, Penaten, and Hipp. Since these products contain vegetable oils, panthenol, and vitamins, they are excellent for daily care of very dry skin; if you have very dry skin yourself, you can also apply such a care product daily. Only in the case of hypersensitive skin and when there is a skin disease, the creams prescribed by your doctor for yourself or your child are, of course, to be preferred.

Caring for the diaper area

Fundamentally, the diaper area requires special care, as it is constantly exposed to a warm, damp climate that can easily lead to skin irritation. As soon as you notice any beginning redness, you should apply a special diaper rash cream after thorough cleaning. The main ingredients are also usually panthenol, allantoin, and vegetable oils and extracts (such as chamomile and calendula). However, if after one day of consistent use there is still no improvement in sight, it is time to consult the midwife or pediatrician. Because a sore bottom hurts your baby, and in the worst case, it can lead to a persistent diaper dermatitis. Apart from very good care, acid-low baby food promotes the rapid healing of a sore baby bottom.
